"Reading Buddies" 2009 -2010
The Westwood Jr/Senior High Library Media Center, the Westwood Public Library and the Washington Township Public library have joined forces to launch a “Reading Buddies” program. Mr. Richter, the school library media specialist, Martha Urbiel, the director of Westwood Public Library,and Maria Halzack, the director of Children's & Young Adult Services of the Washington Township Public Library, have arranged for students from the Jr/Sr High to read to younger kids from the town. Participating parents bring their child(ren) to the Westwood Public Library or the Washington Township Public Library and the students from the school then help the child choose a book, read it to them, and then discuss it. The program runs on most Fridays in Westwood from 4 to 5 P.M. and most Wednesdays in Washington Township from 4

We the People Bookshelf and Picturing America Grants The National Endowment for the Humanities in conjunction with the ALA awarded the Westwood Jr/Sr media center 2 grants. The We the People and Picturing America grant programs provided free hardcover editions of 17 classic books on the theme of “Picturing America.” Included in the collection are Spanish translations of three of the titles .Also, provided were 40 reproductions of paintings depicting America’s past. The Social Studies department has already used some of the materials in their classes to support their American History teaching. The materials will be available in the library media center teachers to borrow and use in their classes.
