Principal Shelley LaForgia Joshua Cogdill Assistant Principal Assistant Principal May 2012 Dear Parents/Guardians and Students: Third Quarter Due to a mild winter, the BOE approved the giveback of unused emergency days. Therefore, the revised calendar reflects that school will be closed on May 24, 25, and 29. Please remember to access your child’s grades through the Genesis parent portal. If you have any concerns, you may contact your child’s counselor or teacher. The fourth quarter is packed with events for parents and students so please check the website for the latest information. Summer Academy The Visual and Performing Arts Department will be running a summer arts program for students in grades 5-12 here at the Jr./Sr. High School from July 9-August 3. For students at the high school level, classes are available in Ceramics, Drawing, Watercolor Painting and Mixed Media Exploration. Please visit our website for enrollment forms and more information. Arts This quarter was quite busy in the Visual and Performing Arts Department, with Youth Art Month and Music in Our Schools Month both being celebrated in March. Here are a few highlights of the many events that the department sponsored: The Woodington Players’ production of Urinetown: The Musical took place on March 15-17. This year’s spring musical proved extremely popular with the faculty and students and was reviewed positively by theatre professionals from the Papermill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ. The production was also entered for consideration for Papermill’s annual Rising Star Awards. Nominations for these awards will be made public on May 7. Several students in Ms. Panno’s 8th Grade Art course had their work on display at Bergen Community College in Hackensack, NJ as part of the NJ Art Education Association’s Youth Art Month Exhibit. The opening ceremony was held on Thursday, March 22. Many families and teachers were in attendance to celebrate and honor our student artists. Families, administrators, faculty and Board of Education members flocked from all of our District schools to the opening reception of the District Art Show on Wednesday, April 11. The award ceremony featured selections from the Jr./Sr. High School Chamber Singers, followed by presentations from District art teachers. The Westwood Public Library was packed; in fact, the event proved so popular that we may have to move to a larger location next year! On Thursday, April 12, the Visual Art Department faculty attended the opening of the Fresh Perspectives exhibit at the Morris Museum in Morristown, NJ. For the first time ever, Westwood Regional Jr./Sr. High School had four students accepted to this prestigious student art show. The exhibit is open to the public until May 27. Over 300 students participated in the first ever spring nighttime Pep Rally. Each class had representatives compete against each other for the coveted Cardinal Cup. The night was enjoyed by all. Athletics The winter sports season concluded with an enjoyable banquet. Seniors experienced mixed emotions and were nostalgic and thankful for their time at Westwood Regional Jr./Sr. High School. Underclassmen were excited to receive their first varsity letter. Three divisional titles were garnered in Wrestling, Girls Track, and Girls Bowling. The girls track team came home with their second State Sectional Title in two years. It was a great evening for all involved. There is a mandatory incoming 9th Grade Athletic Orientation on Tuesday, May 8, for parents and all students who will be participating in athletics during his/her high school career. If you have attended in the past, your presence is still required since there is new information about offerings and forms. If the orientation is missed please contact the Athletic Office for an individual meeting. Schedules and changes can now be found at bignorthconferencenj.org. This website is updated hourly. Guidance Department The NJASK was administered to students in grade 8 during the week of April 23. The AP exams are offered from May 7 - May 17. New this year for seniors is the Senior Exit Survey. Seniors must complete the Senior Exit Survey through Naviance. This is a requirement for all seniors in order to have their final transcripts sent to the colleges they will attend in Fall 2012. Scholarship information is also available for seniors through Naviance on the Guidance website. On April 27, the Guidance Department sponsored a college trip to Monmouth University in New Jersey. Approximately 50 sophomores and juniors participated in this trip. Students were provided an opportunity to meet with admissions personnel and tour the college. Students then experienced lunch at the college’s cafeteria. Summer college program information is currently available on Naviance. It is not too late to register for a summer program. Please check the website for updates. Students currently in grades 8 – 11 have completed their course requests for the 2012-2013 school year. Students will receive their schedules for 2012-2013 through Genesis by mid-June. Students will have the opportunity to make changes to their next year’s schedule prior to the end of this school year.
