Westwood Regional Jr./Sr. High School
Westwood Regional Jr./Sr. High School’s mission is "To provide excellence in education through rich and diverse learning opportunities, enabling students to exercise intelligent control of their future." The key to a successful educational experience is for our students to balance school with the values and goals of the family and community. Together, an effective learning environment is developed to produce an educated young adult who will be a life-long learner, able to contribute positively to society.
The foundation of the effective education offered at Westwood Regional Jr./Sr. High School is a curriculum that fosters high academic achievement through rigor and relevance to the students’ lives. The daily lessons capture the students’ imagination and interest, connect meaningfully to their lives, and help them appreciate their place in a global society. The curriculum summons the skills needed to excel in the world around them and provides the basis for understanding the diversity of interests that will be encountered throughout life. Finally, the curriculum sets high standards to challenge each student to reach his or her fullest potential.
Because of this philosophy and the hard work of the administrators, teachers, and students, New Jersey Monthly in 2010 ranked Westwood Regional Jr./Sr. High School as a “Top 100 High School” in the state.
To challenge our students, we offer three levels of instruction that address all ability levels. Though our school is small, we are able to offer ten AP classes and are equally proud that 52% of the tests taken by our students scored a 3 or higher. The combined average SAT score increased to 1509 for the Class of 2010 and 94% of our graduates chose to continue their studies at the college level. Nine of our graduates were recognized as Edward J. Bloustein Scholars and seven students earned AP scholar awards. Finally, our students constantly score higher on state tests than the state average and outperform other schools in our district factor group.
To balance a strong academic program and become a well-rounded individual, a student must seek challenges beyond the classroom. To enrich our students’ co-curricular experiences, we offer 39 clubs and activities and 24 sports teams. Impressively, over 90% of the student body participates in our music program, a club, and/or a sport.
Since 2000, we have won 40 BCSL American League championships and 9 state sectional titles. Specifically, we have won nine league championships in girls soccer, state championship girls track in 2010, three state championships in football, baseball state sectional championship in 2005 and county finalists in 2010, and boys basketball state sectional championships in 2004 and 2006. We are also very proud of winning the NJSIAA Sportsmanship Award in athletics for the last five years.
Our students are also heavily involved in community service. From aiding our local senior citizens with raking their lawns in the fall to collecting food for the needy and families who have members serving in the armed forces, students at all levels give their time to help others.
