• Washington Elementary School

Located in Bergen County, New Jersey, Washington Elementary School is a K-5 school of approximately 300 students in the Westwood Regional School District.  Established in 1957, Washington School has maintained a tradition of academic excellence.

Washington School has a positive and safe learning environment where all students are treated with respect and their uniqueness is recognized, valued and nurtured. Everyone works together to foster learning in order to enhance literacy, promote technology, and improve character education. Our goal is to provide the opportunity for each student to be the “best they can be.”

At the core of student achievement are the curricular opportunities that are available to children. A comprehensive balanced literacy model provides for strategic reading lessons, guided and independent reading and writing opportunities, and a systematic approach to word study. Our newly adopted language arts program, Treasures, utilizes a variety of materials including shared texts, leveled books, and classroom libraries. A love of reading and writing is fostered through authentic literacy experiences. The Math Connects program provides teachers with resources to deliver the mathematics curriculum effectively, with an emphasis on the Common Core Standards. Engaging activities within a student-centered curriculum promote critical thinking and problem solving.  Students are provided opportunities for enrichment through special classes such as art, general music, instrumental music, media, and physical education. Additionally, students in grades 1-5 participate in both French and Spanish language instruction through the World Language program.

While providing a rigorous academic experience, Washington School offers a rich, nurturing environment supported by dedicated teachers and a full time nurse. Related service providers include speech/language therapists, physical and occupational therapists, Child Study Team (CST) members, and instructional aides who support classified students. The Intervention & Referral Services (I&RS) model supports at-risk non-classified students. Our school guidance counselor provides support in the academic, personal, and social needs of students. The gifted and talented program is offered for identified fourth and fifth grade students in a pull-out setting, as well as whole class enrichment for all students in grades K-3.

Technology is an integral component of learning at Washington School. Technological resources help our teachers deliver instruction more effectively, and allow our students to complete independent, self-directed learning projects in various subject areas. Every classroom is equipped with networked computers for daily student use, and our computer lab allows for regular whole class technology activities. Many classrooms contain SMART Board technology, allowing for hands-on, interactive lessons and demonstrations. Laptop carts are located in our third, fourth, and fifth grade classrooms, as well as in the Media Center for use by lower grades or specialized programs. The school website provides parents with information regarding school events and up-to-date curriculum information.

The faculty and staff of Washington School are committed to creating a learning environment that encourages and supports positive student behavior school-wide. Students are recognized for displaying kindness, responsibility, preparedness, and cooperation through individual and whole school incentives. A monthly Spirit Assembly brings the school together as a community to celebrate our successes and highlight student achievements.

A successful educational program depends on the cooperation of parents, teachers, and the community, working together towards a shared vision. Washington School is fortunate to have an involved Parent School Organization (PSO) that is committed to helping students to be as successful as possible. The PSO supports our students by providing cultural enrichment opportunities, hosting community-building events, and fundraising.

The faculty and staff of Washington School are devoted to the belief that each student is an individual with unique needs and abilities. We strive to help each student achieve his or her fullest potential, while developing a life-long love for learning. This attitude enables us to meet the challenges of academic excellence in a positive, fun and nurturing environment.
